The Battle of Atlanta was fought on July
22, 1864 in Fulton County, Alanta, Georgia.
The civil war was between the Union, led by
William T. Sherman, and the Confederates,
led by John Bell Hood. The Union wanted to
destroy the South's support of the Civil War by
people by taking their food and livestock,
hoping cut off the supply of food the Confederates
needed to stay energized for the battle. He also
wanted to create fear by destroying all of the
properties in the town. His men took a torch to
all of the houses and building, burning everything
to ash. William Sherman's main reason to fight was because he wanted to possess Northern Georgia for their major manufactoring industry and their railroad hub. John Bell Hood was also fighting to gain control of the Northern Georgia but he wanted the land so he could own slaves on it. He sent armies in all directions to try to block off the Union troops and cut off their supplies but was unsucessful.
From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Union
General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a
285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. John Hood
led his soldiers around the Union so that he could corner them and
fight them off without getting into Atlanta. Unforntunely, the
Union were already in Georgia; just five miles away from Atlanta.
The Confederate troops hit the main Union corp in Atlanta
and fought the other two troops in Tennesee and South Carolina.
The Confederates lost to the Union in South Carolina but were successful in Tennesee. The main fight in Atlanta was bloody and lasted 17 hours. In the end, the final corp of Union troops won Atlanta and the remaining soldiers of the Confederate army fleed back to the south.
The battle was the most decisive battle during the Civil War. It stop the southerners being independence and promote the freedom of the slavery. The victory encouraged the Northerners to stand up to the Southerners and helped Abraham Lincoln over George McClellan during the election. Atlanta became the capital of the state of Georgia.
